The 120 mile long island chain is connected to mainland Florida by Route 1 or otherwise known as the Overseas Highway. At the end of this highway, in Key West, is the southernmost point in the United States with a marker showing that you have arrived. The shallow, clear and protected waters contribute to the pristine conditions of the Florida Keys. The reefs in the Florida Keys offer fantastic snorkeling and diving due to the many shallow reefs. The upper Keys offer close proximity to the everglades makes it a premier destination for kayakers and eco tourists.
The Florida Keys have some of the best warm water sailing conditions on the East Coast. The channels are well marked and the Coast Guard does a good job of maintaining the navigational aids. For Americans, the Keys are a nice alternative to the Caribbean islands and Bahamas because you don’t have to have passports or deal with customs inspections. There are many monohull and catamaran options here as there is plenty of water 25-35 feet and most marinas have deep water slips.
