Croatia Sailing Yacht Charters
Sailing yachts were originally used in Croatia to transport people and goods rather than trying to climb overland in this mountainous country. Nearby Italy was a valued trading partner for hundreds of years, just a short jump across the Adriatic Sea.
During and shortly after WWII, Croatia was closed off to the West and did not, at that time develop a pleasure yacht industry, unlike nearby Greece, until much later on. However, today, it has the reputation of being one of the best areas for yacht charter in the world.
The most frequently chartered sailing yachts are traditional gulets that came from Greece, and were often built in Turkey, that have been transformed from cargo yachts into comfortable, roomy passenger ships.
Newer gulets are now built with all the luxuries and amenities that can be found on smaller power yachts and because of their size and volume, these gulets often have six to 8 cabins, making them very popular for large group yachts charters.
Sailing on gulets is very stable, even downwind, and the large engine allows them to move on schedule where ever the wind is coming from.
For those looking for a more modern sailing yacht, Croatia now offers a number of monohull and catamaran sailing yachts in the 50′ to 70′ (16 to 20m) size with crew. Many of these smaller yachts are available with a Captain only, where you help sail and cook or enjoy the local ambiance at restaurants ashore. However, there are also a number of excellent yachts with two crew that are available on sailing yachts with three to four guest cabins. Crew will speak English and know these hometown waters well.
Catamaran sailing yachts are also becoming popular in Croatia and there is a larger fleet with a great range of sizes and types available each summer season.
