Sailors head to the waters of the Caribbean for the balmy and nearly consistent Trade winds. Combined with direct flights from the USA & Europe, easy sails between St. Maarten (half French & half Dutch), St. Barths and Anguilla and longer sails to reach St. Kitts and Nevis or Saba, you are looking at a sailor’s paradise. Whatever you fancy for a sailing charter, monohull or catamaran, you will find comfortable yachts from 55 to 150 feet available during the winter months, with a smaller number available all Summer too. Gambling on the Dutch side of St. Martin & shopping on the French side, there are many harbours and a few small islets to visit for lazy sails followed by swimming and snorkeling. Leeward Islands sailing yacht charters is your ticket to experiencing the Caribbean ambiance with chic and vibrant settings.
St Barths is home to an eclectic mix of luxury yachts and interesting characters. Residents are primarily the descendants of the original French settlers and expat Europeans. In the winter months, celebrities flock to this Caribbean version of St Tropez for fun in the sun. Dining out is a gastronomical pleasure and shopping is plentiful. Make sure your wallets are full as the cost of indulgence is high on this island.
Anguilla can be described as low key elegance and until recently, relatively unknown. It is slowly becoming a rather exclusive island for those seeking a quieter atmosphere. Anguilla’s International Airport is easily accessible by air, through the main gateways: Puerto Rico, St. Maarten/Martin, Antigua and St. Kitts. Unlike St Martin, Anguilla does not see cruise ships in her harbours. You may find occasional ship passengers who hopped over on the 20 minute ferry from St Martin for a day trip. By most standards, Anguilla’s beaches would be considered quiet with a few exceptions.
The two island nation of St Kitts and Nevis, with 104 square miles between them, is one of the smallest nations in the Caribbean. But don’t be fooled, there are plenty of beautiful beaches and lush forests full of wildlife, activities and history.
